After looking at Quentin Blake's style more in depth, I have decided to do something similar. This is my attempt to steer away from the naturalistic look and focus more on the pop up element of the book.

I realised that with the small touch of adding the white stroke over my painting, the element of having it to be cut out was a success.
Already much more engaging, Ayunie - and I'd suggest maybe going for still more watery, desaturated colours - a bit more like gentle watercolour illustrations, maybe? (I do like the strong white outline too - very striking!)
